The SL87 follows the proven SL86, a popular dual-mode direct selection and scanning communication aid, very compact for mounting on wheelchairs. This new LightWRITER has been engineered using the newest technology batteries to get increased battery life in a smaller unit. The SL87 is integrated on a plastic plate, complete with carry handle, neck strap rings and wheelchair mounting points in the base.

A new power-saving feature, Scan-suspend, has been incorporated. It halts the scanning and dims the scan screen after a number of cycles rather than time. Improved battery life is attained by turning off the scanner much earlier when not in use.

The SL87 is suitable not only for switch users who need a compact scanning communication aid, but the new features are designed for the benefit of some direct selection users; the 8-predictions screen is mainly for head-pointer users, and the Extended-text screens for users with short-term memory difficulties and for users with severely impaired vision.

Eight Predictions for direct selection The scan screen can be set to display eight predictions instead of just one, each selected using the number keys. This is ideal for head-pointer users in particular.

Extended Text The scan screen can be set to display four lines of small-sized text, two lines of medium-sized text, or one line of large text. This is for users with short-term memory difficulties (several sentences can be viewed on screen at once), or for users with severely impaired vision.
